Colmer, Arthur R. (Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge). Relation of the iron oxidizer, Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, to thiosulfate. J. Bacteriol. 83:761-765. 1962.-A restudy has been made of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans secured from the acid drainage of some northern West Virginia coal mines. Cultures isolated from ferrous iron agar and then subcultured for 85 consecutive transfers in thiosulfate broth during a period of 14 months were able to use ferrous iron as their energy source when returned to ferrous iron broth. Thiosulfate utilization was quantitatively followed by iodine titration and pH change; ferrous iron oxidation was quantitatively determined by use of 1,10-phenanthroline.Characteristic colonial forms were produced by T. ferrooxidans growing on thiosulfate agar irrespective of whether the inoculum was from iron broth or thiosulfate broth.

Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, a facultative hydrogen oxidizer.
The type strain (ATCC 23270) and two other strains of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were able to grow by hydrogen oxidation, a feature not recognized before. When cultivated on H2, a hydrogenase was induced and the strains were less extremely acidophilic than during growth on sulfidic ores. Cells of T. ferrooxidans grown on H2 and on ferrous iron showed 100% DNA homology. Hydrogen oxidation was not...
متن کاملBIOOXIDATION OF MOUTEH REFRACTORY GOLD-BEARING CONCENTRATE BY AN ADAPTED THIOBACILLUS FERROOXIDANS
The Mouteh refractory pyrite concentrates at pulp densities of 1.5%, 3%, 4.5% and 6% were treated, using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans DSM 581 and the same bacteria adapted on the Mouteh pyritic concentrate. Compared with a non-adapted culture, use of an adapted inoculum of T. ferrooxidans increased bioleaching rate of iron by a factor of 1.940, 2.011, 1.859 and 1.559 for pulp densities 1.5%, 3%, 4...
متن کاملSulfur chemistry in bacterial leaching of pyrite.
In the case of pyrite bioleaching by Leptospirillum ferrooxidans, an organism without sulfur-oxidizing capacity, besides the production of tetra- and pentathionate, a considerable accumulation of elemental sulfur occurred. A similar result was obtained for chemical oxidation assays with acidic, sterile iron(III) ion-containing solutions. In the case of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, only slight amo...

Bacteriol. 85:595-603. 1963. - An organism isolated from acidic copper-leaching waters has been shown to oxidize ferrous ions, sulfur, and metallic sulfides but exhibit peculiar responses to thiosulfate. The name Thiobacillus ferrooxidans has b...
متن کاملDistribution of thiobacillus ferrooxidans and leptospirillum ferrooxidans: implications for generation of acid mine drainage
Although Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans are widely considered to be the microorganisms that control the rate of generation of acid mine drainage, little is known about their natural distribution and abundance. Fluorescence in situ hybridization studies showed that at Iron Mountain, California, T. ferrooxidans occurs in peripheral slime-based communities (at pH over 1....
